Locations visited:
Cowamarup
Providore
Local Margaret River lunch venue with wine tasting
Bettenay’s Nougat
Vasse Virgin
Canal Rocks
Busselton Jetty
The city gives way to open farmland as we head south, cattle grazing lazily along the roadside as Perth fades behind us. Our first stop is Cowaramup, a town with a playful streak, home to 42 life-sized fibreglass Friesian cows scattered along its main street. Take a break here for morning tea (own expense) and duck into the local cafes and chocolate shops before continuing to Providore, a haven for food lovers stocked with gourmet produce and regional wines, perfect for sampling before you buy.
Driving deeper into wine country, we stop for a tasting session at Bettenays Nougat Company, pairing local wine with handcrafted nougat, and one of the genuine highlights of the day, before your included lunch at one of Margaret River's acclaimed wineries or breweries. From there, it's on to Vasse Virgin, where shelves are lined with naturally made soaps, oils and skincare products, with plenty to sample along the way.
Coastline and the Road Home
The tour turns coastal from here, and the scenery shifts dramatically. At Canal Rocks, timber walkways lead you out across ancient, wind-sculpted granite as the Indian Ocean surges and crashes below. Turning north for the journey home, we make one final stop in Busselton to walk out along the iconic Busselton Jetty, the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. From here, it's a relaxed drive back into Perth, with arrival expected around 8:30pm.
